RE: What's New, Things Creating For the Forum, New and Old Methods Discovered
Meet Lloyd Burlingame;
Lloyd sitting with a previous Seeing Eye dog - a yellow Lab - at a city parkLloyd Burlingame -- Broadway set designer, artist, teacher, and author -- began losing his eyesight later in life. After nearly being run over by a taxi cab while crossing a street in New York City, Lloyd decided it was time to get a Seeing Eye dog. He was matched with Hickory, a male yellow Labrador retriever. "My life had gone from black and white and gray into glorious technicolor. It was just the most fantastic thing that had happened to me in years. I hadn't been able to walk that quickly in a decade, and I never thought I'd be able to do it again. And that was just the beginning of a wonderful partnership." He returned last year for his third Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador/golden retriever cross named Al. Lloyd needed a dog who could handle the hustle and bustle of the big city, and shortly after being matched, he took Al on a tour of Manhattan to test him out. They traveled through Greenwich Village to Lincoln Center, by bus and by subway. "Then we went to Times Square, to jump into the deep end of the pond so to speak. It was a zoo. I've lived here 50 years or so and I've never seen it such a mess. There was a tremendous amount of construction, it was a holiday so the school kids were out, there were tourists everywhere. It was just horrible. And he just aced it. He zipped right through. And I thought, if he can do that, he can do anything!" After nearly being run over by a taxi cab while crossing a street in New York City, Lloyd decided it was time to get a Seeing Eye® dog.
