Remember to shift when wearing glasses. This will help adjust the eyes to the weaker lens and no astigmatism prescript. No glasses is the best way to go of course.
With no glasses; If a object is unclear; shift on it. Glasses are the last resort.

The close pen can be placed at a variety of distances. 4 inches out to 1, 2, 3 feet, 10, 15. Does not have to be close all the time. Get a little close practice in to also keep close, reading vision clear.

I like to use street signs, telephone poles standing at 1-10 feet from the closest and looking to the far which can extend for miles, then the horizon after the last pole.
