Farsightedness and patience to see results - Rosangela - 06-19-2014 08:08 PM Hi Mary, I'd like to have some tips, or some advice from you and the team, as far as "how" I should set a schedule for my eye-improvement training. I've practiced a little of shifting, swing, splashing cold water in my eyes a few times a day, palming, neck & shoulder exercises twice a day, central fixation, plus I take eye supplements with lutein & zeaxanthin, and I take multi-vitamin plus pure carrot juice every day. Only the exercises I do not do every day, and I think that's when I fail. I had more discipline in the first week, then I neglected. I also practice Qi Gong and meditation, plus I am a certified Energy Healer. So I have also been taking care of mind relaxation and overall well-being. I have tried soooo many methods to improve my eyes, from mental, to physical, to spiritual approaches - and I have noticed only sparse flashes of clarity (not so often in the last two months). Here is a bit of my eye-story background. According to my mother, I was born eye-crossed (left eye only), or so I became right after birth (according to later information I received). As far as my birth being a difficult one, my mother only told me that the doctor was a bit careless, but no Forceps or Cesarean. Only recently my older sister told me that in fact I was not born cross-eyed, but I acquired the defect in my left eye due to the doctor unintentionally poking my left eye at birth. I don't know whose version is correct, and my mother is no longer alive to clear out this story. In fact, I don't care about the origin of the problem, but the present situation and how to fix it. The deal was done, for one reason or another, and I started wearing glasses at the age of 2. Ophthalmologists said I would never be able to see clearly without glasses. Of course they say that! But I was a kid and my mother didn't know better. So, I endured that inconvenient thing on my face for 13 years, taking it out only for taking a shower and sleeping. When I was 15 then, driven by vanity and the wish to be loose (the glasses made me feel limited), I decided - with all the mind power I could have - that from that day on I'd not need glasses anymore. I put the specs on the dresser and I left to work. For the first time in my young life I was able to see everything perfectly, and not double as it had always been. I had a great day, and that was the first one of my eyes freedom! My left eye was never able to read so clearly, but now it was not crossed anymore. I still could read and see everything very well because the right eye was good and I had the compensation. Doctors said that I had also astigmatism and hypermetropia - I don't remember now in which eye, and the reason why I don't remember is that I really never cared for that information. I could see very well, near and far, including in low light. My mother thought it was a miracle that I could get rid of my glasses at 15, just "deciding it" like that! And she kept warning me to stop reading in low light, "You will get bad vision this way! Have more light on the subject! Quit straining your vision!" - I know she was right, although I was not straining! I could see! Now I wonder how much of that self-fulfilling prophecy really influenced my subconscious mind to the point that I made it true! Today I am 45 yo, and when I was 40 my sister, and also my niece in a different occasion, mocked me when I was struggling reading a menu and pushing it a little far away from me. They said, "Oh, you need reading glasses!" - And I said, "No, I don't! It's just that the light is not good here!" - My sister insisted, "You do need! We all need them after 40!" - That really disturbed me! And I think that comment stuck to my subconscious mind (again!), and after that I started being aware of my farsightedness. So, the farsightedness has progressed gradually within these last five years, and now my vision is really, really blurry when I read, or do small and up close activities like doing my nails, writing by hand, sewing by hand, etc. It has got to a point that is making me beyond sad. It's so emotionally painful to not be able to read a product label when I am at the store; or to read my books, etc. I have tried many things, except to go back to eye glasses. In my searches, last year when I found out about Bates Method, I found hope! Then, after a while I got discouraged for seeing no results. But I know that I could apply myself better - I just don't seem to have the patience when the results take too long to show up. That's why I would love to have some advice from you, on how to proceed from this point, how often to work out my eyes, etc. Sometimes I think I would benefit more from having an NV coach, in the sense that the expert would charge me for certain exercises and results, and would motivate me in a regular basis. I wouldn't feel alone in the battle, you know what I mean? So, I am hopeful again now that I found Mary, Andrew and other students to talk about this. I found great encouragement by watching your video, Mary, about the pinhole glasses. That just triggered more faith inside me. Not that I will use often any kind of pinhole device, but the fact that I was able to read a teeny-tiny label through the hole I made in a 3x5 card after seeing your demonstration on video, made me think that it's possible to revert the situation, naturally! I just need to know exactly "how" to do it in a way that is regular, and that I don't feel unmotivated. I'm very grateful to Bates and for the kind of work you and others are doing with NV. Thank you so much for your time! Rosangela RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - andrewc - 06-20-2014 08:43 AM (06-19-2014 08:08 PM)Rosangela Wrote: Hi Mary, Hi Rosangela, Wow, that's a great story. You have a lot of good things going for you, you sound very disciplined, don't give into those who just want to just blindly follow conventional solutions, and try to keep yourself healthy on both a mental and physical level. Eye education a la Bates is much different than most things - it's quite counter-intuitive. It's not so much about the things we do, as it is about stopping the things we are doing (which are undermining our vision either near, far, or both). Problem is we do most of these counterproductive things on an unconscious level, and as Bates demonstrated, it originates mostly from a mental strain of some kind. The information and tips given here are free for everyone, and it is mostly a process of self-discovery. There aren't any prescriptions of exercises that work for everyone, we sometimes have to try many things, or combination of things, until we find something that triggers a positive response, even if temporary. I would suggest you first read as much as you can of what Bates wrote with regards to reading fine print, seeing halos, his sections on presbyopia. In many cases the use of the imagination was very effective, so becoming familiar with how he used imagination to restore vision is good. Do you know that it took Bates himself over 6 months to restore his near vision, after he had been wearing reading lenses of all strengths for years? And that was after he by chance just discovered how he could imagine little people inside the black spots on a wall picture - he imagined they were inside caves, moving around, or something to that effect. Movement is very essential to imagination too, as we don't want to ever imagine things stationary either. A sample of fine print, and a miniature eye chart would be helpful to have, to start looking at frequently throughout the day. Of course at first it will have to be held further away where you see it well, and gradually brought in closer as you gain the confidence seeing it, and remembering the familiar letters or words. Always pay particular attention to the white spaces between and inside letters, it's less strainful than trying to see the letters themselves. Close your eyes frequently and / or palm, do some swinging to relax your nerves, and don't get anxious about this, it will only block improvement. RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - ClarkNight - 06-20-2014 08:51 AM (06-19-2014 08:08 PM)Rosangela Wrote: Hi Mary, Hi Rosangea, Thanks for allowing me to post the reply from our other contact. It saves time. Here it is below and I will then re-read your newer version and then post a extra answer; Hello Rosangela, Thanks for the complement. No schedule. Think of shifting as a natural habit that is practiced all day long; if something is seen blurry; don't squint. Instead shift on it. I been teaching a little by word of mouth since 1976. Got into it more at age 40, 17 yrs. ago. Splashing cold water on eyes; that's not the Bates method. It can goof up your natural tears. Water is ok, like when swimming (if its clean water, no chlorine, no bugs...) but don't splash it on the eyes to improve the vision. You need your natural tears. Yawn for natural tears. Neck and shoulder; need more description. Some types are good, some not. Some eye vitamins have eyebright, bilberry leaf; not good. Avoid those 2. The other nutrients you mentioned are ok. BilBERRY is good. Eat spinach but no packaged, no frozen. Too many chemicals are being added. Eat fresh. Avoid soy. The processed, GMO type is toxic. I'm afraid to even try the original Chinese fermented soy that some people say is ok. I had nothing but trouble from soy. It can effect the vision, reaction to sunlight and thyroid. What are you considering exercises? Shifting is a natural relaxed, correct vision habit. So is central-fixation... Switching close and far is kind of a exercise but do it relaxed; 5-10 min day and skip some days. Integrate the shifting, make it as natural as possible. Long swing and all those extras are not mandatory. Pick the ones you like, that work for you. Sunlight is mandatory. Strabismus; difficult birth? Forceps? Cesarean? Those things can heal over time. Congratulations on quitting glasses on your own!! Strabismus can cause the low vision. If there was astigm in the glasses prescript this would have increased the astigm. Good thing you left the glasses. The Bates method cures all this. http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id40.html You need to perfect the function of the fovea; central-fixation in both eyes so they converge perfectly on the same point. BUT; remember that central-fixation does not mean to fix the eyes-vision immobile on one point; the eyes, your vision-attention continually move 'shifts' from part to part on a object, object to object. The foveas really move point to point but its so fast its not consciously 'controlled'. It's automatic. People with clear vision don't have to think about shifting... It just happens. Don't think of moving your eyes; forget about the eyes, level of clarity and just enjoy what you are looking at. Get your mind out into the world or on a positive hobby, project... Shift on small objects, their tiny parts up close. Read fine print. Do these with both eyes, then one eye at a time, then both together. Extra practice with less clear vision eye. Then just shift for fun on the objects; inspect the small parts, colors in a stone, flower, piece of yarn... Do some switching; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id8.html All Dr. Bates, my books on this page are free in PDF; http://www.amazon.com/William-H.-Bates/e/B004H9DOBC/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1 PDF page; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id148.html Read my book on top; Do It Yourself - Natural Eyesight Improvement - Original and Modern Bates Method with Better Eyesight Magazine by Ophthalmologist William H. Bates & 10 E-Books, Audio, Video Lessons Its a lot but you can just look at the pictures with short directions or use the 10 steps smaller condenses version down the page. Dr. Bates book Perfect Sight Without Glasses has additional switching training at the end. Read his description of shifting, other practices. Improve your memory, imagination if needed. His Better Eyesight Magazine has it all! Read the close vision chapter on the website and in book; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id23.html , and print this card, follow directions; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id35.html Try the bead sting; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id9.html http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id66.html The Bates method returns the eye to normal shape. This corrects Myopia, Presbyopia, Astigmatism, Hypermetropia, Farsight Dr. Bates says to read in sunlight and that reading in low light won't hurt you if you can easily see the print and do not strain, don't make a effort to see. Yup, those negative comments made you worry about your vision. Sounds like all you have is presbyopia. Maybe a teeny tiny imbalance in the point of convergence or divergence. Many people do and never know it their entire life, still have clear vision. You'd be surprised how clear; BEYOND 20/20 the vision becomes when the eyes movement is perfect, balanced. That Presbyopia is easily cured with the fine print and shifting. I had it at age 40. Cured it. Age 57 now, still ok. I do need to practice with the print and the tiny shifting to keep it clear due to computer use, chocolate-sugar addiction... but I don't practice every day. I usually do even if its not needed. Do not practice reading fine print on the computer. Print it out and read on paper. Don't let anyone discourage you. Its sad that many people get jealous, angry when you improve your vision. Instead of wanting to learn, try it they try to put you down. Its something the doctors say cannot be done so when you get clear vision, it confuses them. Recently I had a major pollen reaction, my eyes all puffy, covered with the white, yellow pollen and that cloudy sight. Its always temporary and goes away in July. Some years nothing. A lady in my building that scoffs the Bates Method, gets jealous when others improve their vision was so happy last week when I came downstairs with the spring time red, itchy eyes. This was right after I was telling her about ladies and 2 men almost attacked me in the grocery store for speaking about mad cow with another customer. Then 4 big guys outside continued and sent a crazy guy to chase us home. Was dangerous, scary. Bad area of city to live in. The lady neighbor in my building didn't care; she immediately changed the conversation to my eyes, hoping I might need glasses. In a bad situation she jumped at making me feel worse. This bullying is so common, the Bates Method has a strange reaction on the conservative-dogma type individual. Others are afraid to try it so they hide that with anger or another strange attitude. Others get cured but then state it was not the Bates method. They want it to be their idea, method. The egos! So glad your not using glasses. Use the pinhole paper to read medicine bottles. Don't use it for the regular fine print practice because you want to get all natural functions of the eyes working correct by the print, shifting. Here's a video for the correct habits card; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knHMjB7T39A Read the fine print for 10-20 min a day. You can skip some days. Start at a slightly blurry distance and work to closer and closer. You can go very close before it totally clears up close but do it gentle. I know people that have seen weird visual effects from forcing the eyes to read at 3-2 inches before they reached a comfortable clear level but it always results in an improvement and the weird effects are gone. Its breaking up the tension in the lens and returning circulation, full movement and accommodation. It also helps cleanse the eyes. Thanks for posting here! This way myself and other experienced people have something to work from. I also do video replies and Google Hangouts, Skype. The GuestPage greatly helps me reply easy with a speech recorder to text. I do video, audio reply's specifically for students. Others benefit and it cuts down on email reply's to many students with similar questions. Definitely; if you can see through a pinhole; you can get back to complete clarity. Shifting on tiny parts and reading fine print with the naked eye, no pinhole will get that central ray focusing on the eyes fovea. 'The truly natural pinhole effect'. Then go to microscopic print. Read the PDF on top of this page to know what is the true Bates Method and what to avoid; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id110.html Website is being simplified, condensed little by little to make it easier for everyone to read. Try the swing; when you shift on a small letter, object; see it move in the opposite direction. When the vision is blurry the print will jump around too much, like shaky jello and might show other weird effects. As you keep practicing the vision and effects clear and this opposite swing becomes perfect. You can see it on objects at any distance. It relaxes the eyes, mind; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id16.html You can do it! Mary RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - ClarkNight - 06-20-2014 09:17 AM Here is the #2 new reply; Try to think of everything as practicing natural visual system functions. Avoid doing them as a drill type, 'use of hard effort' exercise. Some are exercises; like switching. Long Swing, Sunning... ; think of as fun games or relaxation times. There is really no time limit. Do what right for you. Shifting, central-fixation, memory-imagination, butterfly blinking, breathing, good posture can be thought of as relaxed natural vision habits. We practice, 'imitate' correct function of the eyes, brain, vision (visual system) as a easy habit until it becomes automatic, occurs on it's own maintaining clear eyesight. Then we don't need to practice. Just be aware to avoid squinting, locking the eyes-vision immobile when looking at something. The brain has a DNA... code in it for correct eye-vision function. Since life, development of the eye began. You are just reminding it to return to it's normal function. Once it remembers; its automatic. Replace squinting, effort to see with; shifting, blink, relaxation. Central-fixation occurs pretty much on its own. I call it centralizing so people remember it means to also shift. MOVEMENT keeps the sight clear. Frozen eyes, mind tenses the system, lowers the vision. Shifting... is done up close to cure presbyopia. Same way distant vision is cured. Shifting and central-fixation are really just the eyes fovea/macula (which produces the clearest vision, better then 20/20!) moving upon each object, part, tiny part you look at. Wherever you look; it's perfectly clear. If you want to see a clock on the wall; face it. Don't try to see the clock in front of you and a picture on the wall on the right perfect 'equally' clear at the same moment. Look at one at a time. This is what the eyes are doing as it moves object to object and part to part on a object. Try this; draw 2 small dots about 1/4th inch apart side by side. (start 1-2 inches apart if its easier) Look at the dot on the left <. Move 'shift' upon it. Blink. Which dot is most clear? It should be the one your looking directly at, the left <. The right > is in the peripheral field (though very close to the macula-fovea, central) and is less clear. Now look at the right > dot. Shift on it. Now that dot is most clear. Now do this with smaller dots, 2 periods and move them closer together. You can get to the point where you can look at 2 microscopic dots; one your looking at will be in the center of the fovea and most clear. The other will be on the side of the center and be a little less clear. This is prefect central-fixation and shifting. It improves 'perfects' your convergence, lens' movement-accommodation, eye movement, everything. No force, effort when doing this. Think of something happy. See the dot you look at, shift upon swing in the opposite direction; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id16.html Now just read for fun. I just do shifting if something is not perfectly clear. Otherwise I do nothing. But practice of shifting and doing the shifting on small parts of objects really helps speed improvement and keeps the vision better than 20/20. Sometimes we don't even realize we are staring, making an effort. A bit of practice prevents this. Just do it all with relaxation, nice and easy. Forget about the eyes and level of clarity. Remember; Dr. Bates says; in all his years of practice he has never seen an eye that has normal vision all the time; its natural for it to fluctuate. It always returns to normal clarity if glasses are avoided. (and we do the right thing) There is an error of refraction each time the eye moves to a new point, distance. When the sight is clear and your relaxed, this is not noticed. The change in refraction, adjustment to the new object, distance is so fast. Qi Gong! That stuffs strong! Interesting. I wish we knew what really happened to your eye. If the doctor poked it, it seems to have healed. Maybe a bit of eye socket misalignment or muscle irritation occurred and these can correct themselves as the child grows, mother caresses the baby's head... Possibly the doctor corrected 'adjusted' it but didn't want to admit he had to do that. Something went right for you. (Quote; I put the specs on the dresser and I left to work. For the first time in my young life I was able to see everything perfectly, and not double as it had always been. I had a great day, and that was the first one of my eyes freedom!) This is so inspiring! Thanks you so much for posting this. I think this is presbyopia, not faright. It can be corrected with shifting on small objects, fine print letters and reading fine print. Also use the correct vision habits card; It's on the website and in the e-books. Print it, cut along the dotted lines; http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id23.html Sometimes the close vision improves in 1-2 days. Because you have not given into the wearing of reading glasses (plus lens) you have prevented an increased level of blur. I figure you will progress quickly. Sometimes the vision improves in stages. When you reach a level of improvement; if it stays there for a while, maybe only a few days, month..; don't worry; it will reach another improved level of clarity and get to perfect 20/20 and better. Then just read a bit of fine print each day or every other day. Carry a ring, stone and shift on the tiny parts in the sunlight. 5-10 min reading fine print, then 30 seconds to 2 min on the stone 1-3 times a day is all you need. I like it so much I print out Amazon Kindle books that authors give me free; 4 pages per sheet paper, sometimes 6, 8 and enjoy a good book while getting the benefit of the eyes lens staying mobile, eyes healthy. Thanks to Andrewc for helping reply to students! (I proofread my posts after posting so give my reply's about 30 min before you read.) Thanks, Mary RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - ClarkNight - 06-20-2014 11:41 AM Forgot to tell ya; If one eye has less clear vision; practice extra time with that eye reading the fine print, shifting on a stone, flower... This way; Both eyes together. Then one eye at a time. Clearest eye first. Then less clear eye, little extra time with this eye, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Then couple seconds again with clearer eye (to keep a balance). End with both eyes together again. 5-10 minutes is about right. Look from the print to the far, then back to the print. RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - Rosangela - 06-20-2014 04:23 PM Thank you so much, Andrew. I appreciate your time and support. I've been doing as you and Mary and the books suggest, but I really, really need to stop being attached to results. I have had a few moments of clarity, but when next time I see the letters even blurrier than ever I become sad thinking it's a regression. I just received on the mail the notification for renewing my driver's licence and this time they require eye exam - I immediately got nervous about that, even though the exam is only in September! I was able to read the letter with some struggle but not too much, but I had a hard time reading "Summer Solstice" 2 feet away on the wall calendar. Sometimes it happens that farther away is as difficult to read as it is up close. Is it possible to have near and farsightedness at the same time??? Thank you! When I close the right eye, I see only long smudges over the page - that's how I see the lines with my left eye, no words or letter at all! All smudged! Only one time, when I was practicing this while reading Harry Benjamin's book, I was able - with much struggle - to see what "appeared" to be the word "altogether". I think it was more of a guess (because of the shape of the letters together) than a proper reading, but I was happy anyway. My guess (or reading) was correct! That was the only time! I tried again later, other days, but it didn't happen. Even on the computer where the texts are bright and shown on a large screen, I can't read only with the left. I guess you will tell me to keep doing it, right? Without the strain. Thank you, Mary! RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - ClarkNight - 06-20-2014 04:47 PM Howdy; If vision is imperfect at one distance it can be imperfect at all. Improving at one distance helps improve all distances. Maybe some far practice will also help the close. Do some of the switching I am teaching Mr. Spagetti. Going to upload a good video on this page tomorrow; http://naturaleyesightimprovement-batesmethod.com/GuestPage/thread-41-post-139.html#pid139 Smudged is no problem; just shift on the smudges. Shift part to part on the blur. Imagine a clear black letter with eyes open. Close the eyes and imagine it, imagine shifting on it. Open and check for improvement. RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - Rosangela - 07-08-2014 04:39 PM Hello Mary & Andrew I have been practicing this exercise (on this page: http://cleareyesight-batesmethod.info/id8.html): "When Using One Eye; Looking at the pen or far object; the far object between the left and right eyes no longer looks like it is in line with the pen. It will 'appear' to be to the left < or right > of the pen, depending on which eye is being used." and I notice that only when I cover the right eye (the clearer one) the object in line and beyond the pen appears to be to the left, as indicated above. However, when I switch the eye, covering the left and looking with the right, nothing changes. Both the pen and the object remains in the same place, for the right eye, but not for the left eye. Shouldn't the object appear to be on the right when I look only with the left eye? Does that mean something? I have printed some pages, and I have been practicing as I can. There is a LOT of material do read yet! Thanks! Rosangela RE: Farsightedness and patience to see results - ClarkNight - 07-08-2014 07:15 PM Hi Rosangela, This appears only when the close pen and far object are placed 'between the left and right eyes'. Cover the right eye; look only with the left; far object appears to be to the left < Cover the left eye; look only with the right; far object appears to be to the right > Heres a video; Video shows 3 different ways to do this. You don't need to do the switching much. Just 2-5 min 3-4 days week until the sight is clear. Main practice is just relaxation and shift if a object is blurry. Avoid trying to see. Without glasses the eyes know what to do and it will occur without even thinking about it. The switching just gets that convergence, divergence, and few other mechanical things aligned, perfected. Go to the end of this book where you see the same switching pictures as on this page for more detailed examples; If you type in switching in the Google book viewer search bar it will bring up more pictures, examples. Let me know if you had the pen and far object between the left and right eyes? I would like to see what your doing as you explain what you are seeing; in a Skype or Google Hangouts video communication. Maybe nothing is wrong. Sometimes a bit of divergence or convergence imperfection can cause the images to be seen incorrect. This is easily corrected. Glasses can cause the eyes movement to be 'off'. As we practice without glasses the movement returns to normal. Many people have a bit of imperfection in this eyes movement and never even know it all their lives, no problem. Many people have a dominant eye. After they learn the Bates Method they get their vision and eye movement perfect, balanced in both eyes. That's a main secret to clear sight, along with relaxation.
